SUITS AND THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD
Wearing suits doesn’t change who you are, but it can change the way the world looks at you. Several recent studies have answered the old stereotypes that: will clothes change you? And really, what is it?
Wearing
suits doesn’t change who you are, but it can change the way the world looks at
you. Several recent studies have answered the old stereotypes that: will
clothes change you? And really, what is it?
Clothing
appears as a necessity that has gradually become important, changing people’s
perceptions over the years, more specifically the man’s way of seeing the
world. “Dressing up in formal clothes helps you feel more powerful than ever.
And wearing a suit is the shortest way for men to see it. ”- Abraham Rutchick,
author and professor of psychology at California State University, Northridge.
Rutchick and his co-author also points out that those who wear more elegant
clothes than normal clothes will often think broadly and look at the issues
comprehensively, but those who don’t Taking care of your appearance will often
be narrow and pay too much attention to details (though not all of them).
They
conducted a survey on the relationship between clothing and human perception,
specifically how students on university campus rate the degree of dignity in
their daily style and their opinion on “how important is formal clothing?”.
Then proceed to give cognitive tests to measure whether the way they deal with
is in a general and abstract way or detailed and intuitive. If broad and
abstract, then one has thinking of the whole – a must in the virtues of a
leader. And those who have an intuitive and meticulous way of solving problems
show that they focus on details, see the world more closely – those are
qualities of an employee.
The
results showed that students who rated “formal clothing important” were more
likely to address cognitive tests in a broad and abstract way. But since this
is only a small test on a school scale, the importance of dressing in a suit
has yet to be fully evaluated. So in a follow-up field survey, the researchers
asked half of the students to put on their clothes before taking the cognitive
test, surprisingly, they became more confident than their colleagues who wear
normal clothes.
Thereby,
the researchers have concluded: “Dressing affects awareness
comprehensively, affecting the process of shaping people’s thinking, at all
times is right” – according to the article Social Psychological & Personality
Science report.
Wearing
suits is not only the appearance, it also shows personality. Professor Rutchick
also speculates that this is linked to the fact that a successful businessman
leading a company is his job to paint the big picture. Meanwhile, the employees
will be in charge of focusing more on details.
An
experiment in 2012 also showed similarities between dressing and forming
thinking – when a person wears a white blouse, they perceive themselves dressed
as a doctor, so execution of assigned tasks will be more careful and
meticulous. Conversely, when they are dressed as artists, or in particular
painters, they tend to work less cautiously. So we live in a world where
clothing has a huge impact on one’s behavior and perception. And wearing a suit
will be seen for the symbol of power, success, so they will somewhat behave
like that.
