The introduction of smart-casual style
Determining the birth
of smart-casual style is still a difficult problem to solve, because there are
many important milestones associated with this style, but where is its actual
debut year? According to The Phrase Finder, the term “smart-casual”
officially appeared in the 1980s, however, it was “used in common since
about a century ago”. In fact, the record of this term shows that it has
existed since 1924, in The Davenport Democrat And Leader of Iowa (USA).
Regardless of how the
smart-casual style originated, it still has a close relationship with the
business-casual style. Although these two styles are completely different, for
now, men still use them the same way.
Previously,
business-casual clothes were often worn by men for formalism but still gave a
relaxed, light-hearted look, while smart-casual clothing did not. However,
thanks to office dresscode and in many situations, life has been somewhat more
open, smart-casual and business-casual can replace each other in office and
places that promote elegance in different ways of dressing.
4 “nailed” items to dress smart-casual
style
1. Blazer
It seems that every
modern gentleman has at least one blazer in his closet. Of course, the
smart-casual style will not be complete without this red checkered shirt. You
can choose structured or unstructured blazer to create stylish mixes and
smart-casual outfits. Lastly, don’t forget to finish your look with a pair of
trainers (or Oxfords / Derbies) in a very popular style of socks.
2. Bomber jacket
Because blazer is
considered the main soul of both smart-casual and business-casual style, then
what to do in case that tailor-made item is too formal for an event or occasion?
Try replacing the blazer with a bomber jacket. This item has appeared in
military uniforms before, so it is “tactical” and more casual.
However, to fit the smart-casual style, the bomber must have a slim-fit shape,
neutral color (such as white, black, navy blue, beige …) and made of cotton
or wool weaving.
3. Chambray shirt
Often appearing in the
coordination of men’s office style over the years, chambray shirts not only
show off their masculine and luxurious beauty with smart clothes, but also
diversify with smart styles- casual. You can combine chambray tops with
slim-fit jeans and Chelsea boots (or loafers) for an elegant and polish
appearance.
4. Tailored trousers
Truly flawed when it
comes to smart-casual but ignore tailored trousers. Perhaps many men still
choose this type of pants for their daily wear because not only easy to
coordinate, but it also elevate the
wearer’s appearance. Wearing nice pants, pair with t-shirts (or polos, shirts)
and trainers (or boots, loafers) for a well-groomed, masculine look in any
situation.
