If
a pair of high heels makes a woman seductive, then a suit is what makes a man
look.
Men
in suits have a strange magic power, seemingly how much life is carried on them
in a fit and full of sophistication. The 20-year-old man in a suit suddenly
became mature and romantic. 40-year-old man in a suit has a hard-wearing style.
Fashion has a saying that “there is no cheap or expensive, only medium
suits or not”. The value of a suit lies in the fit and ingenuity in each
seam, making the soul of this type of outfit. The variety of contemporary
fashion has created a change in abundance. There are many product lines
launched every year, but no representative can replace the luxury tailoring
clothes for the sophistication in each line. You will not be able to find two
identical tailored suits because they are “personalized” for each
wearer.
What
is a suit?
The
simplest and most common definition, “Suit is a set of clothing that
includes outerwear, pants and jacket (or we call it a vest), all made from the
same type of fabric (same color and material) ”. However, nowadays we often see
a 2-piece European suit without a vest, originating from being dressed in the
office, where it is necessary to be formal but comfortable enough to work for a
long time. Today’s offices are usually warm in winter and cool in summer thanks
to air conditioning, so adding suits will accidentally reduce the usability of
a suit. So, unknown ever since, people almost forgot the vest. Is it just a few
formal occasions in a short time such as conferences, parties or outdoor parties.
Ancient
England was the land of origin for the idea of suits. The prototype for the
modern suits we know today was first sketched and built on ideas in the early
20th century in the United Kingdom. Since then until World War II, London has
always been the first place people think of when talking about the definition
of “fashion capital”, especially fashion for being strong among
magnificent Parisians, flashy Milan. As time went on, London lost its monopoly
position that day. The Italian tailor brought his ingenious hands into fashion
and changed it to the present day dizzying.
Nowadays,
there are 2 ways that a tailor makes you a suit is Made-to-measure and Bespoke
Made-to-measure:
This term seems a bit strange to most people wearing suits in Vietnam because
there are quite a few brands in Vietnam that make suit following this
procedure, due to the price and cost … A made-to-measure suit allows customers
can choose the type of fabric, available options and styles as listed above as
well as additional details: collar, cuff… so that customers can achieve the
desired expectation before the tailor takes measurements and places orders. A
complete set of made-to-measure suits will be sent to tailors to correct the
final steps and deliver to customers. Some luxury brands such as Canali,
Brioni, Kiton, … allow customers to have this option. The price is usually
higher than the ready-to-wear from 15-25%.
Tailor
made (Bespoke): First, they will outline for you the desired style in your suit
and then take you to choose the fabric. Selected cloth will be the most
experienced worker holding a tailor scissors based on the sketch. They will
give you an appointment that includes five fitting tests to accurately measure
each change in your body to ensure the best in both appearance and convenience.
It usually takes up to six weeks from the day you receive your appointment to
complete your suit.
Today’s
suits still retain traditional tailoring techniques, although they have been
more or less integrated with the advancement of technology and science and
technology. In a world dominated by automation and production lines, the
fashion life cycle is gradually shortened by the advent of ready-to-wear
fashion, so the timeless historical value of tailor-made apparel is something
rare and worthy of respect.
