The appeal of a Brooks Brothers dress shirt
The Brooks Brothers dress shirt has been a staple of American
style, throughout the twentieth century and now beyond. Its enduring appeal may
be due to its signature details — such as the softness of American-grown Supima® cotton
and the exclusive 6-Pleat Shirring® at the cuffs — or perhaps
it’s the several unique fits. The shirt we love has undergone a few
reinventions, of which two remain significant: the introduction of the
button-down collar and the perfection of the non-iron cloth.
The Oxford Button-Down: A Game Changer
Much like denim jeans or the silk necktie, the invention of
the button-down collar had an irrevocable effect on menswear when introduced by
Brooks Brothers in 1900. Just four years earlier, our former president, John E.
Brooks, was abroad in England attending a polo match when he noticed the
players buttoned down their collars to prevent them from flapping in the wind.
Mr. Brooks decided to bring this look stateside, where it became wildly
successful (and often duplicated). If imitation is truly the sincerest form of
flattery, we couldn’t be prouder of this particular sartorial development.
A Shirt That Works Overtime
The non-iron
dress shirt is the undisputed workweek and wardrobe essential and has been
inextricably linked to Brooks Brothers since 1953. That year we introduced
Brooksweave,® our first foray into the non-iron game. Created
in cooperation with DuPont, this shirt was made from a cotton and Dacron® blend
that required little to no pressing. Until then, wash-and-wear shirts were
created for convenience but at the expense of comfort. Brooksweave changed the
industry; it was a quality-made shirt that was both soft and easy to wear.
More than 60
years later, we’re still the leader in non-iron innovation. Today’s shirt is
crafted from Supima cotton, grown in the United States and treated to remain
wrinkle-free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (and beyond). It’s soft yet structured and
breathable, with pucker-free seams along the plackets, collars and cuffs.
Choose from one of four distinct fits, several collar styles and multiple
weaves ranging from oxford to pinpoint.
